Nicholas P. Yorio
Senior EEO Investigator
Nicholas P. (“Nick”) Yorio joined the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) as an EEO Investigator in January 2012. As an EEO Investigator, Nick is responsible for investigating complaints of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation involving University employees and preparing written decisions and recommendations based on factual findings. Nick also trains University employees on diversity awareness and sexual harassment prevention, as well as the University’s reasonable accommodations process under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Nick also serves on a number of University committees examining ADA issues and compliance, as well as specialized teams where knowledge of workplace accommodations is essential.
Prior to joining OIE, Nick was a Staff Attorney at Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc. (GHLA), where he worked for over five years in the areas of employment law and health access. At GHLA, Nick worked closely with indigent persons living in and around Hartford County on various health related legal issues, focusing around Medicaid, Medicare, and related state and federal health programs. His work included individual cases before administrative agencies and state courts, and class action impact litigation. In his employment practice, Nick advised and represented recently separated employees in a wide variety of areas, including unemployment compensation and discrimination matters. His experience includes advancing cases brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act, and various other statutory and common-law claims through all phases of litigation before administrative agencies, including the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO), and state and federal courts.
Nick earned his law degree from Columbia University School of Law, where he was twice recognized as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and awarded the Alfred S. Forsythe Prize upon graduation. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy in 2002. Nick is admitted to practice before all Connecticut state and federal courts. He is a past member of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Section and Connecticut Employment Lawyers Association and served as the Young Lawyer’s Section Diversity Director for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 bar years.
